Iain Newton, Silent B Inc.
I am a consultant specializing in Brand, Product, Marketing & Communication Strategy. Contact me.
In a career spanning more than 25 years, my experience has been defined by my work for iconic companies at critical moments in their evolution. I worked at Apple from 2006 to 2015 and prior to that I worked at some of the most creative advertising agencies in the world, including Mother and Wieden + Kennedy, leading brand and communications strategy for clients including Nike, Jordan, Target, Orange, Citibank, Egg and ESPN.
While at Mother, I helped position and launch the (RED) initiative which creates products and experiences to fund the fight to end AIDS, with founders Bono and Bobby Shriver. I worked closely with (RED) partner brands American Express, Armani, Converse, Motorola, and Gap.
While in the UK I also helped in the creation of Zopa – a new way to lend and borrow money directly between individuals.
In 2006 I joined Apple as Director of Marketing & Communication Strategy. During my 8+ years there I worked on every major product launch from the first iPhone in June, 2007 up to, and including, iPad Air, iPhone 6, and Apple Watch in 2015, contributing to, and experiencing, one of the most extraordinary chapters in Apple’s history to date.
My experience at Apple went well beyond marketing and communication, and included working extensively on customer experience design in Apple Retail stores and non-Apple direct stores, such as Best Buy and FNAC. I also led strategy development for many of Apple Retail’s significant store openings in major cities across the globe.
I had the immense pleasure of working closely with Lisa Jackson, ex-head of the EPA under the Obama administration, to communicate Apple’s on-going commitment to the environment, which involved a complete strategic and creative rethink and redesign of Apple’s environment website.
During my time at Apple I witnessed first-hand the ever-evolving field of marketing and communication and what makes a great company a great company. Driven by my desire to use my experience to good effect and hopefully get to work with other great companies and brands, I left Apple in 2015 and founded my own practice, Silent B Inc.
I am currently working with the leadership team of The New York Times (2015 to present), helping them create a global mission statement, guiding principles for the organization, their first ever brand book, the evolving “Truth…” brand campaigns with Droga5, and mentoring brand strategists and marketers among a host of other projects.
Additional clients, past and present, include (RED), Cartier, On-Running, Wirecutter, Ford, Uniqlo, Dolby Laboratories, Blue Bottle Coffee, and Squarespace.
I have done pro bono work for Edible Schoolyard NYC and PopTech (Forbes’ “Most Inspiring Conference of 2018”).
I am an avid vinyl record collector and list maker. If you would like to be added to my “10 albums I listened to last month” email just let me know.
